In this two-part session, participants will learn evidence-based best practices for addressing social needs for maternal health and have an opportunity to share strategies that are working well in practice.  

Session 1: Best practices in addressing social needs in clinical practice for maternal health.

Presenters: Dr. Kristin Tully and Dr. Simone Chinnis 

Objectives: 

  • Define social/ structural determinants (SDoH) of maternal health. 
  • Describe research findings on best practices for SDoH screening and referral, from birthing parent and maternity health care team member perspectives.   
  • Describe strategies for strengthening healthcare systems to address social needs.

Session 2: Building on clinical strengths to mitigate harmful SDoH for maternal health.

Objectives: 

  • Identify examples of institutional and practice strengths for mitigating harmful SDoH for maternal health. 
  • Assess the feasibility and potential impact of recommendations. 
  • Organize plans for implementing more universal, strength-based, and timely provision of resources.

Presenters 

Dr. Kristin Tully, PhD, is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has led mixed-methods research on SDoH in maternal health and implementation of recommendations through UNC  

Health, where she serves as a core team member of the UNC Health Executive Equity and Inclusion Council. She is an investigator on the American Heart Association funded Pregnancy and Postpartum/Postnatal (P3) Enhancing Access and Quality To Achieve Equitable Maternal and Infant Health (EQUATE) Health Equity Research Network, where she serves on structural/social determinants of health core.  

Dr. Simone Chinnis, DNP, MBA, APRN, FNP-C, is an Instructor in the College of Nursing at the Medical University of South Carolina. She is a bilingual practicing nurse practitioner and is serving as the inaugural Director of the nation’s first remote, telepsychiatric fellowship for psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners (PARTNER) Program. Additionally, she services as the MUSC School of Nursing Director of Community Engagement.
