Reviewing Policies for Equity Impact: A Tool to Support Equitable Maternal Health Outcomes

Implementing targeted policies is a powerful strategy for eliminating racial inequities in maternal health outcomes. In this webinar recorded on May 14, 2021, Dr. Cynthia Osborne, Director of the Prenatal-to-3 Policy Impact Center at The University of Texas at Austin, discussed newly developed policy review criteria to analyze the impact of policies on equity. Dr. Osborne demonstrated how the policy review criteria can be applied to Medicaid and how participants can utilize evidence-informed tools to understand the equity impact of proposed and current policies.

The Prenatal-to-3 Policy Impact Center at The University of Texas at Austin LBJ School of Public Affairs translates research on the best public investments into state policy actions that produce results for young children and society. The Prenatal-to-3 team of researchers and nonpartisan policy experts collaborate with policymakers, practitioners, and advocates to navigate the evidence of what works, set priorities, act with confidence, and analyze results for continuous improvement.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the equity criteria for reviewing policy developed by the Prenatal-to-3 Policy Impact Center; and
2. Apply the equity review criteria to a given policy.
