Virginia Invests in Doulas to Improve Maternal Health Outcomes

The United States is facing a maternal health crisis with poor maternal health outcomes. Across the country, states have adopted many strategies to address maternal mortality and morbidity. One state policy strategy to promote racial equity in maternal health outcomes is Medicaid coverage of doula services.This article outlines the state of Virginia’s efforts to expand coverage for community doula services for Medicaid beneficiaries beginning in January 2022.
